Framing Guide

Choosing the Right Wood Frame Finish for Your Space

August 6, 20264 min read

A frame is never a neutral choice. It acts as the transitional boundary between the artwork and the architecture of the room. When selecting a frame finish, you are establishing how the work communicates with the surrounding colors, materials, and lighting.

Natural Solid Wood

Natural maple and oak finishes have a soft, neutral presence. They work best in light-filled rooms with Scandinavian, modern, or minimalist interiors. The natural wood grain brings a quiet warmth that feels organic. Pair natural finishes with drawings, botanical illustrations, or high-key photography.

Matte Black

Matte black is the classic exhibition choice. It establishes a strong graphic boundary, focusing the eye directly on the print. Black frames look exceptional on crisp white walls or rich, saturated paint colors. They are the ideal choice for monochrome black-and-white photography and bold contemporary screen prints.

Warm Walnut

Walnut is a rich, traditional finish with deep chocolate undertones. It carries a sense of permanence and history, making it perfect for study rooms, offices, or living spaces with wood flooring and leather furnishings. Pair walnut frames with historic photographs, oil prints, or oil paint reproductions.
